Creating connections over nourishing meals

Peter is a man of many talents and through our ‘Be Healthy Cookout’ program in Bundaberg, he has been able to support clients to create new friendships, feel connected as well as enjoying nourishing meals.
Peter has been a driver with Be for over seven years however he has previously worked as a chef and owned a restaurant. He has also supported the community during the 2013 Bundaberg floods by providing meals at the evacuation centre.
The ‘Be Healthy Cookout’ is one of the most popular events for Bundaberg clients and is held once a month a Wyper Park Scout Retreat. The social support program brings clients together at the community kitchen for either a breakfast or brunch cooking demonstration thanks to Peter. Clients can learn new skills, enjoy a healthy meal, and leave with a new recipe catered to a single serving size.
Bundaberg Community Coordinator, Jodie Beck said “this program has been so successful thanks to Peter and his love of cooking and a good joke. Peter has a wonderful way of bringing clients together and support them to be involved in the cooking process.”

“The program is as much about offering a delicious meal for clients as is the importance of social connection. It’s wonderful to see clients build up rapport with other clients and our team. They are building long term friendships and often connect with each other outside of events. I can see this program is improving connections and creating purpose,” added Jodie.
Anne is a Be client and has been attending the ‘Be Healthy Cookout’ events for months and said “I very much enjoy the event and Peter’s cooking. I love sharing with my friends about the program and I can’t wait for the next event.”
